Taking Engineering Out of the Classroom

Biratnagar | 2527 August 2026
For three days in late August, engineering conversations moved out of the classroom and into colleges across Biratnagar.
From 25 to 27 August, Engineering Corner brought discussions on climate change, public and green spaces, solid waste, air pollution and disaster risk reduction to Bhanu College, NIT College, PUSOE, PUSAT and Martyr’s College.
The programme was organized by हामीEngineer’s in collaboration with EWBN-PU.
The timing of the conversations was difficult to ignore. Floods had recently affected communities in different parts of Nepal, bringing questions of preparedness and resilience closer to home. But the sessions were not designed as a response to one particular disaster. Instead, they focused on the everyday issues that shape how prepared a city and its communities are when a crisis comes.
What happens to waste when a city receives heavy rainfall? What role do public and green spaces play? How should young engineers think about air pollution? Where does disaster-risk reduction fit into engineering education?
These questions gave students an opportunity to look at familiar problems from a technical as well as a community perspective.
Engineering Corner was deliberately simple in its format: go to colleges, start conversations and allow students to engage with issues they see around them.
For EWBN-PU and हामीEngineer’s, that was the point. Engineering education is not only about what students learn for an examination. It is also about whether they can recognize the problems around them and understand where their knowledge can be useful.
